How To Make a Plantain Poultice & Ointment

How To Make a Plantain Poultice & Ointment

As times get so much tougher for people and especially now with the new reforms to health being implemented by the government, it is becoming far more important that we learn some of the old ways at least.  And making our own Herbal remedies is very important for so many reasons..

Learning how to make a few simple Herbal remedies is most definitely a start in the right direction for anyone that wishes to get away from the chemical industry and get back to far more natural methods of dealing with simple ailments such as scrapes and grazes or those pesky insect bites that itch like the blazes.

With commercial medications and over the counter treatments sky rocketing in price there is a real growing need for us to learn at least a few basic and safe remedies that we can indeed make ourselves at home. Not too many people can afford to pay between $20 and $30 (and even higher in some cases) for a tube of cream that usually does not do what it is supposed to anyway. For many people that is an entire weeks supply of food tied up in a tube of cream.

Making our own remedies for simple things such as grazes or insect bites for example is far cheaper and far healthier for our bodies too.

Not too many people these days, and especially those in the low income bracket simply cannot afford the high cost of buying over the counter medications.

Learning to make a few basic preparations ourselves is not only easier on our pockets but it also ensures that we remain chemical free and stay natural with far less risk of getting allergic reactions to the medications.

***WARNING:
Please note: Always be extremely careful, when using homemade preparations and always test on a small area of skin first. If swelling or redness appears, then cease using it immediately and seek medical attention if required.

Always confirm with your Medical Practitioner before using any homemade remedy and especially before ingesting any homemade preparations to make sure that they will not conflict with any prescription medications that you may be taking.

We are not medical practitioners in any way and you must always seek medical advice before using any herbal remedy.

We are endeavouring to bring just a few basic remedies here that are regarded as safe to use under normal conditions that you can easily make at home. For herbal remedies for more serious conditions than we will ever cover here on the blog, please visit a licensed Herbal Practitioner or your own General Practitioner for proper medical advice.***

Nature has provided us with an abundance of plants and herbs that have the most wonderful healing properties. Many we can very safely use such as plantain, dandelion, mint, lavender and chamomile to name but a few. We will only be dealing with such common plants to use for making very basic and simple remedies.

I hope over time, to be able to share here what knowledge gets passed onto me or through the group and what I can research about, for at least a few basic herbal remedies that will be of help to others.

Now back to the actual remedies that came through my email this morning and that sparked the desire and acknowledgement of a need to learn about how to prepare Herbal Remedies for ourselves.

This post includes contributions from two other people, for which I am very thankful and the link is provided for the first article to be viewed in full from the original site that the information was gathered from. It is an awesome site and would definitely warrant a visit and a good look around. There is a wealth of information there.

Today I am going to share with you how to make both a Plantain Poultice to reduce inflammation or to treat a wound or rash, and a Plantain Ointment that will relieve itching from insect bites.

Foraging has its own challenges. Thorns, needles, rocks, mosquitos, wasps. But the good thing is: we are never lost, as there are so many healing weeds around. I'm sharing this recipe with you because it helped me countless times. And there's only one ingredient needed.

Mind you, it's a rather special ingredient. It acts as a sedative, anaesthetic, alterative, antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-toxic, anti-histamine, and anti-inflammatory. And all of that in one plant.

And then comes this most helpful addition from Dalana that she very kindly shared with the group on how we can make Plantain Ointment to cure itches which her own family loves.

Plantain Ointment
(A good cure for itches)

It's really easy you can do it one of two ways. You can either use a cup of chopped up plantain to one cup lard. Heat over low heat for about one hour then strain out. This one is a little gooey. The other way is 1 cup olive oil to 1 cup chopped plantain. Heat again, over low heat for about 1 hour. Strain out now here is the part I goofed on. You want to use a little bit of bee's wax. I have never used it before and I put too much in so it has to be heated a little to melt it and make it soft. You can use bees wax beads that's what I used. Both ways gives you a good amount of product with the smell of fresh cut grass. It has so many uses.

I hope that you have enjoyed the beginning of what I hope is only the beginning of bringing to you a few basic herbal remedies that you can make yourself at home and save you some money in the process.

My grateful thanks go out to both Dot and Dalana for their most valuable contributions and kicking my tired old brain into seeing that we really do need to learn these things to benefit ourselves and our families, now and into the future.

If any of our readers would like to share a herbal remedy that you make and use, then please do feel free to help others out by sharing it in the “Comments” section at the bottom of this page. Thank you.
