Do Something for Others - My Affirmation

Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s words say it all here.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was a civil rights hero that fought for the rights of all mankind, was tragically assassinated just after 6pm on April 4th 1968.

He was fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside his second story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

When that day was over, the world had lost an amazing and brilliant person. He was only 39 years old.

All that is left for me to say is that these are the words that I live by and to affirm here publicly, these same words.

I began my silent work with the underprivileged, disadvantaged and poor, over 44 years ago this year. Seeing that nothing totally positive was ever being done to assist the poor in really life changing ways to end poverty, I decided that if anything was to change that I needed to step up to the plate and do something myself. No one else was obviously going to. Not in real life changing ways at least.

Sadly so many of the large charities think that it is sufficient to just hand out a bag of food or a few clothes etc. but none are managing to solve the problems that are causing these issues in our communities nor are they doing much more than simply making these people in dire need more and more dependent on them and their gifts of food etc. They are instead, making these people more dependent on charity. These people need real hope to hold onto. Not just hope that they will be fed at some point but that there is hope for them to be able to get off the streets, get off unemployment and be functioning members of their societies once again.

This is the sole reason that we have been working so hard towards reaching our goal of building an Academy solely for the underprivileged and disadvantaged adults in our communities. The homeless have many advocates but for those on very low incomes or government assistence there is very little help if any. There are plenty prepared to judge them, call the spungers, lazy, idle, no hopers etc. But so few understand the plight that these underprivileged and disadvantaged adults are firced to face each and every day.

So, my husband and I founded, and federally registered our charity so that we will be able to help far more people in need, these people in our communities that are suffering needlessly.

We are now trying to raise enough money to build a place where these people can come and live for a spell to learn new skills that will once again give them a far better chance, bettering themselves and hopefully gaining some form of further higher education or training and employment by the end of their training period.

At the very least, we will be able to give them a place to live temporarily while they learn the work, life and social skills needed to be able to stand on their own two feet and become self- reliant and self-sustaining.

They will gain back their dignity, confidence and self-respect.

They will be empowered to sustain, and support themselves without being dependent on charity or handouts.

These very powerful words above from Dr Martin Luther King Jr. onlyspeak volumes to us and keep alive the words that keep us motivated and on track of alleviating poverty in our communities.

These very words have been so deeply ingrained in me for a whole lifetime.

Here is MY affirmation; placed here for all to see and being publicly declared today:

I DO choose to identify with the underprivileged - because I HAVE been underprivileged.

I DO choose to identify with the poor - as I HAVE been poor.

I DO choose to give my life for the hungry - as I HAVE experienced prolonged hunger.

I DO choose to give my life for those who have been left out of the sunlight of opportunity - as I was.

This IS the way I AM going.

If it means suffering a little bit (or more), I AM going that way.

If it means sacrificing, I AM going that way.

If it means dying for them, I AM going that way, because I DID hear that voice saying "DO SOMETHING FOR OTHERS.”
